6 Inch Minus Fill and Base Rock

6 Inch Minus is our most popular and most widely used fill and base rock, running from 6 inch stone all the way down to fines in a single graded blend. That spread of sizes is the key to how it performs: the larger rock carries the load while the fines fill the gaps, so the material compacts into a firm, stable layer rather than shifting underfoot. It is the default choice on the Big Island for raising ground and building solid house pad bases. One reason crews reach for it so often is how easy it is to work. Unlike larger raw fills, 6 Inch Minus can be handled with a mini excavator or skid steer, so you do not always need full-size equipment on site to spread and grade it. Lay it in lifts, compact each layer, and you have a dependable base ready for a finer course on top. In a typical build sequence, 6 Inch Minus sits above any raw fill such as Pit Run and below the finer base courses that finish the grade. It is firm enough to build on yet workable enough for smaller jobs, which is why it suits both large contractor pads and everyday homeowner projects. For most general fill and base work across the island, it is the reliable all-purpose pick.
